From October 12 to 13, 2024, teachers and students from four schools of BASIS International & Bilingual Schools · China network gathered at BASIS International School Wuhan for the opening of an Recycling Art Event.
2024年10月12日至13日，中国·贝赛思国际/双语学校中四所校区的师生们汇聚于武汉贝赛思国际学校，一场环保艺术活动拉开帷幕。
This event was a creative journey using recycled materials as the medium, documenting how these materials transformed into three-dimensional sculptures in the hands of students. Each piece was not only a brilliant display of creativity but also a profound reflection on environmental sustainability. Here, the beauty of art and ecological awareness converged, inspiring deep contemplation.
这是一场以回收材料为媒介的创意之旅，记录回收材料如何在学生手中蜕变为一件件三维雕塑。每件作品不仅是创造力的璀璨绽放，更是对环境可持续性的深刻思考，艺术之美与生态意识在此交相辉映，启迪深思。
Through these works, the young creators lead us to think together: How can we bring new life to discarded objects? How can we, as individuals, combat environmental degradation and drive an unceasing wave of renewal and innovation?
借由这些作品，年轻的创造者们引领我们共同思考：我们该如何给废弃之物带来新生，如何以个体之力对抗环境恶化，推动重塑与创新的浪潮永不停歇。

"If the Earth had emotions, do you think it would be happy?"

Globally, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, and up to five trillion plastic bags are used annually. Half of all plastics produced are for single-use purposes—used once and then discarded.
在全球范围内，人们每分钟购买一百万个塑料瓶，每年用掉的塑料袋多达五万亿个。人们生产全部的塑料中有一半都只做一次性用途——仅使用一次就扔掉。
About 85% of all plastics produced end up in landfills, taking up to a thousand years to decompose. Millions of tons of plastic waste are released into the environment, with most of it either incinerated or dumped. Rivers and lakes carry plastic waste from inland to the oceans, creating alarming Trash Vortex in the seas.

Faced with such a scarred and wounded planet, what can we do to heal its wounds? With this in mind, this year, the art teachers at BASIS International & Bilingual Schools · China decided to respond to this question in a unique and creative way.
面对如此伤痕累累的地球，我们能做什么来修复它的伤口？基于这样的思考，今年中国·贝赛思国际/双语学校的艺术组老师们，决定以一种独特而富有创意的艺术形式来回应这一问题。
“Art goes far beyond the confines of painting and sculpture; it can use various forms of expression to profoundly convey the creator’s unique insights into social issues,” shared Mr. Micah Gooden, Chair of the Fine Art at BASIS International School Wuhan. “Therefore, we decided to host a network art festival themed around ‘environmental protection,’ aiming to deeply embed the concepts of ‘sustainable art’ and ‘Recycling art’ in our students' hearts, inspiring their environmental awareness and creativity.'
“艺术，它的范畴远远超出了绘画和雕塑的局限，它能够借助多种表达形式，深刻传达出创作者对社会问题的独特见解。”武汉贝赛思国际学校艺术组的教研组长Mr. Micah Gooden老师分享道，“因此，我们决定举办一场以‘环保’为主题的校际艺术节，旨在将‘可持续艺术’与‘环保艺术’的理念深深扎根于学生们的心田，激发他们的环保意识与创造力。”

A month in advance, we launched an environmental recycling initiative at BASIS International School Wuhan. Recycling stations were set up throughout the campus, mobilizing the entire school—both teachers and students—to collect discarded items from daily life. Over the course of a month, we gathered more than 2,000 plastic lids, over 200 milk cartons, more than 300 plastic bottles, and several boxes of old, discarded toys.
我们提前一个月在武汉贝赛思国际学校内，发起了环保回收活动。我们在校园各处设立回收站，发动全校师生之力，共同收集日常生活中产生的废弃物品。经过一个月，我们总共收集了超过 2000 个塑料瓶盖、200 余个牛奶盒、300 多个塑料瓶和数箱废弃的旧玩具。
The collected items were cleaned and disinfected, transforming them into valuable materials essential for the art creations. Through this process, none of us were mere bystanders; we all became active participants in the cause of environmental protection.
收集来的物品经过清洗、消毒，摇身一变成为了此次艺术创作不可或缺的宝贵素材。在这一过程里，我们每一个人都不再是旁观者，而是化身为环保事业的积极践行者。
At 9 a.m. on October 12, the Recycling Art Festival officially began. During the opening ceremony, Mr. Jose Valcarcel delivered a profound speech on the core theme of the event—"Recycling Art"—highlighting the importance of the concept of sustainability and encouraging students to fully explore their creativity and innovative thinking in the process of creation.
10月12日早上九点，本次环保艺术节正式开始。活动的开幕式上，Mr. Jose Valcarcel深刻阐述了本次活动的核心主题——“环保艺术”，不仅凸显了可持续发展理念的重要地位，更鼓励同学们在创作的过程中充分发挥创新思维与创造力。
"You are going to work with recycled materials—plastic, old toys, seashells, paper, and more—to create sculptures, installations, and mixed-media pieces that challenge conventional notions of art and waste. Each piece tells a story of resourcefulness and environmental responsibility. " Mr. Jose Valcarcel said passionately.
“我们将利用回收材料，如塑料、废旧玩具、贝壳、纸张等，创作出独具匠心的雕塑等艺术作品。” Mr. Jose Ortega Valcarcel 满怀激情地说道， “这一举措将颠覆传统艺术与废品之间的界限，让每一件作品都成为资源循环利用与环境保护理念的生动载体，讲述着资源再生与守护地球的故事。”
After 11 hours of artistic creation, 44 teachers and students from five BASIS schools collaborated to complete artworks centered around four major themes. Through the practice of this Recycling art activity, the students of BASIS International & Bilingual Schools · China not only showcased their creative talents and artistic gifts but also deeply understood the vital importance of environmental protection and sustainable development through their active participation.
经过11小时的艺术创作，来自五所贝赛思学校的44位师生携手合作，成功完成了四大主题的艺术作品。通过本次环保艺术活动的实践，中国·贝赛思国际/双语学校的学生们不仅淋漓尽致地展现了他们的创造才华与艺术天赋，更在亲身参与中深刻体会到了环保与可持续发展的至关重要性。

PLASTIC WHISPERS:
Chihuly Bottle Project
轻声“塑”语：奇胡利塑料瓶创作

Inspired by the works of American glass artist Dale Chihuly, teachers and students embarked on a creative journey using plastic bottles as their material. Just as the original works are renowned for their colorful glass sculptures, the participating teachers and students spray-painted the transparent plastic bottles in the theme colors of the event. Through clever cutting and reassembly, they breathed new life into the plastic bottles. Their forms are diverse and ever-changing; some resemble swirling ribbons dancing freely, while others resemble flowers blooming on plastic branches. Together, they converted into a uniquely distinctive tree-shaped three-dimensional structure that is both creative and thought-provoking.
受美国的玻璃艺术家Dale Chihuly作品的启发，老师和同学们以塑料瓶为材料，开始了这一艺术品的创作之旅。正如原作品以其色彩斑斓的玻璃雕塑著称，参与此次创作的师生则将透明无色的塑料瓶喷绘上活动主题色彩，再通过巧妙的切割与重组，赋予了塑料瓶全新的生命。它们的形态千变万化，有的仿佛肆意舞动的旋转彩带，有的则如同在塑料枝头绽放的花朵，共同汇聚成了一棵独具特色的树型立体造型，既富有创意又引人深思。
“I think the main purpose of this artwork is to raise awareness among the people that the immense amount of trash and waste products we can generate just by one day.”

This artwork also cleverly utilizes the transparency of the plastic bottles and the contrast between different colors, allowing light to weave and refract between the bottles, creating a unique play of light and shadow. This further enhances the artistic impact of the piece and reinforces the conveyance of the environmental theme.
该作品还巧妙地利用了塑料瓶的透明度和不同颜色之间的对比，使得光线在瓶子之间穿梭、折射，形成了一种独特的光影效果，进一步增强了作品的艺术感染力和环保主题的传达力。

UPCYCLED URBANITY:
Cardboard Houses
纸壳城市：由废纸盒构建的房屋

What kind of wonderful world can we create with those discarded milk cartons? In the Cardboard City project, teachers and students carefully cut and spray-painted over 300 discarded milk cartons in various colors. Different shapes and sizes of cardboard were reassembled by the students and teachers to construct houses of various designs, collectively forming a dreamlike "Blue City." In this realm, there are pointed-roofed lofts and cozy cottages with windmills, arranged in an organized manner, interconnected by small staircases. Delicate bridges span across the map of this miniature world, connecting not only the physical spaces but also bridging creativity and dreams, filling the entire "Blue City" with infinite possibilities and vitality.
利用那些废弃的牛奶纸盒，我们能够构建一个怎样的奇妙世界呢？在纸壳城市的项目中，师生将300多个废弃牛奶盒一一剪裁，并喷涂上不同的颜色。不同形状、不同大小的纸壳在师生们手中重组，构建出不同造型的房屋，共同组成一个充满梦幻色彩的“蓝色城邦”。在这个国度中，既有尖顶的小阁楼，也有带风车的温馨小屋，它们错落有致地排列着，彼此间通过的小楼梯相互连接，精巧的桥梁横跨于这微缩世界的版图之上，不仅连接了物理的空间，更搭起了创意与梦想的桥梁，让整个“蓝色城邦”充满了无限的可能与生机。
“When I'm using the used materials, the one that was considered as ugly and useless into building those new and beautiful houses, I would feel like they are reborn, and they are born into new pieces.”

LIDSCAPE：Plastic Lids Mosaic

A variety of bottle lids, when cleverly combined, can bring unexpected artistic surprises. In the LidScape project, teachers and students used their unique vision and creativity to combine small everyday items—such as bottle lids, plastic blocks, and takeout box lids—with shells of various sizes, creating a vibrant and dynamic natural landscape. The students and teachers sorted over 2,000 plastic caps by color and meticulously adhered them to a canvas, weaving together a stunning natural scene through exquisite color combinations. In the artwork, the plastic waste that is eroding the environment reshapes the inherent beauty of nature, creating a powerful visual impact and revealing the profound contradictions hidden within, prompting deep reflection.
各式各样的瓶盖，在巧妙的组合之下，也能带来意想不到的艺术惊喜。参与塑料盖镶嵌项目的师生们，凭借独到的眼光与创意，将日常生活中随处可见的小物件——瓶盖、塑料积木、外卖盒盖等，与大小不一的贝壳相结合，共同组成了一幅洋溢着盎然生机与蓬勃活力的自然画卷。师生们将2000多个塑料盖按照颜色一一分类，再一个个粘贴在画板上，精妙的色彩组合交织成一副绚烂的自然图景。作品中，那些正侵蚀环境的塑料垃圾重塑了大自然原有的美丽，所产生的强烈视觉冲击力及其背后隐藏的深刻矛盾，引人深思。
“We had a team discussion about the subject that we should focus on and we finally decided to do like a natural land scene because we're making a picture with recycle materials such as lids and seashells and stuff. It would be a very good idea to rebuild nature through recycle materials to kind of resonate with the theme of Natural Protection.”
