The ZERO WASTE BOXES is an outstanding artistic installation filled with creativity and environmental concepts. It cleverly draws inspiration from the artistic style of American sculptor Louise Nevelson and combines it with the theme of environmental protection, creating a unique visual impact. Each participating teacher and student received their own doll box, where they selected items of interest from the numerous boxes of old toys collected and arranged them in their preferred style. Finally, all the doll boxes were uniformly spray-painted, forming a three-dimensional puzzle with a gradient of blue and purple. Each doll box serves as a window, allowing us to glimpse the creators' inner world regarding childhood and environmental awareness.

"I want to express that even the adults they need to keep the trueness and being curious to the world like a child so keep their childishness."

At the closing ceremony, Mr. Micah Gooden shared with the attending teachers and students: "During this limitless journey of creativity, we not only skillfully utilized over 2,000 plastic lids, more than 200 milk cartons, and over 300 plastic bottles, but more importantly, each piece incorporates our boundless imagination and profound reflection on environmental protection."

Each uniquely crafted artwork serves as a vivid and tangible lesson in environmental education. "The art community is looking for new and innovation. If you can take something that has been junk to one person and turn it into fine art, that's incredible and it can help foster that idea of conservation. "

Ms. Mara Gil, BASIS International School Shenzhen

"We really think sustainability and reusing and repurposing objects is a huge factor, not only in education but in the bigger issues in the world. So, we try to teach students that you don't have to have a piece of paper to create art, you can create art from all sorts of things. You can repurpose materials. Arts is really about the process and having a purpose for the piece. It's not just about making it beautiful; it's about making it to have a story."

Every individual, no matter how small, can become a powerful participant in the ideals of sustainability and environmental protection. When these concepts are widely disseminated and gradually accepted by more people, they ignite a greater enthusiasm for participation, allowing us to collectively engage in this noble cause. This is where every small effort converges into a significant force. This art event is a small yet steadfast contribution from our students, who, in their unique ways, profoundly interpret and convey their insights and deep care for environmental protection and sustainable development through art and creativity.

The successful conclusion of this event not only provided students with a brilliant stage to showcase their creativity but also fostered a strong environmental atmosphere within the campus. Let us join hands and take firm steps to implement the noble ideals of environmental protection and sustainable development, collectively creating a grander vision of a greener and more beautiful future. Although the collaboration art festival has come to a successful close, we will unwaveringly continue our exploration of the perfect integration of environmental protection and art.

Honors Literature Students

Unlock the Depths of the Graphic Novels

Written by Mr. Edward Winsted

Translated by Ms. Claudia Huang, Ms. Cora Lin

Recently in our Honors Literature class, students embarked on an exciting journey exploring the unique and dynamic literary form of the Graphic Novel. The curriculum was designed to introduce students to the power of visual storytelling, and our anchor text was Maus by Art Spiegelman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel that recounts a Holocaust survivor’s story as told by his estranged son through a compelling blend of imagery and text. Making it not just a dive into history but a visual representation of how the past is passed on to future generations effecting the fabric of our times and our relationships as well.

The text highlights the horrors of WW2 and the Holocaust but also captures a sentiment of the time in a way that few texts are able to do so well. In many tales of a similar time and place the horror creates a contrast between the evildoers who commit atrocities and the innocent victims leading audiences to easily point the finger at the evildoers and creating the illusion that victims are by not merely human and innocent but righteous in their victimhood. The more evil those perpetrators are, victims (and those of us who are yet innocent of such crimes) are pure and good by contrast.

Maus humanizes the main characters showing them to be flawed, as we all are. This unit has not only deepened students’ understanding of Literary Elements like Characterization, Perspective, and Setting it also delves into the fallout of war and historical trauma sparking a vibrant exploration of graphic novels as serious literature.

Teaching Objectives

and Curriculum Design

The primary objective of this unit was to expose students to the idea that literature does not merely exist in traditional text-based formats. We wanted students to critically engage with the combination of visual art and narrative. Recognizing how images can deepen thematic exploration and appreciating how graphic novels address complex historical, social, and familial topics.

Our teaching objectives included:

A key aspect of the course was a collaborative partnership with the school library, which has become a hub for graphic novel resources and the bi-weekly haven for our 9th grade students! Kindly hosting our free reading time, they’ve supported and aided us during this unit on many occasions.

Our librarian's have played an essential role in helping students find additional graphic novels as well as other texts to read and analyze, even ordering new recommended texts to help students step deeper into the world of literature, as Graphic Novel's straddle that perfect rift between leisure and literature! With the library’s support, we created a display of critically acclaimed graphic novels and memoirs, encouraging students to explore the genre further.

The students responded to this unit with creativity and intellectual curiosity, producing some exceptional work. With an open format for deeper questions we encouraged students to create their own way of demonstrating their understanding. Some students debated whether this text should be taught to younger audiences, others used their artistic prowess to recreate some of the scenes from the text, and others gave inspired presentations deep-diving into the literary depths to excavate themes ranging from racism, national/racial identity, to historical revisionism. Each group demonstrated an understanding of how visuals elements can work together with text to tell a story.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, Vol.1 (Bendis/Pichelli): With the introduction of Miles Morales, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man reinvents the classic superhero narrative, offering a fresh, relevant take on what it means to be Spider-Man. The series combines emotional depth with dynamic action, making it a standout in the superhero genre.

Hinterkind, Vol. 1 (Edginton/Trifogli): Hinterkind transports readers to a world where humanity has nearly vanished, and mythological creatures have reclaimed the Earth. With its blend of post-apocalyptic survival and fantasy elements, it’s a thought-provoking exploration of power, society, and the natural world.

Uzumaki (Junji Ito): Uzumaki pulls readers into a deeply unsettling narrative where a town falls under the spell of spirals, leading to nightmarish consequences. Ito’s mastery of horror and the surreal ensures an intense, creeping terror that escalates into a gripping, unforgettable experience.

Scott Pilgrim Bundle, Vols. 1-6 (Bryan Lee O'Malley): Scott Pilgrim delivers a unique blend of humor, romance, and action, following its protagonist through a series of wildly imaginative battles. With its distinct mix of video game-inspired storytelling and sharp dialogue, the series captures the struggles of young adulthood in an inventive, relatable way.

Conclusion

结语

It is our hope that this unit on graphic novels has not only broadened students’ understanding of literature but also sparked a deeper appreciation for various mediums of storytelling. By blending the visual and the textual, graphic novels offer a uniquely digestible medium for storytelling, one that resonates deeply with students. Whether students are reading for pleasure or scholarly analysis, the graphic novel has proven itself to be an invaluable literary form—one that connects deeply with today’s readers.

As we move forward, we are excited to see how future classes will engage with this medium and are delighted to see our expanding library collection supports their literary exploration!

Developing Leadership

Mr. Phil Dust

As the Dean of Student Activities, my job is so much more than managing the incredible array of student led clubs we have to offer. These clubs are not only a place for students to develop interests and passions in a low stress environment, providing a much needed break from the pressures of academic demands. They are also a place to develop leadership skills. Skills that will transfer into many facets of the students’ future aspirations, hopes and dreams. They will also greatly enhance college applications.

Leadership development is, therefore, at the forefront of my role. Every year, club leaders attend a seminar before they start their clubs, where they learn how to effectively run a club. In this seminar we cover things like how to lead by example, ensuring they adhere to school rules and instill this in the members thy lead too. This year, we have introduced a rubric for leaders to follow, allowing them to demonstrate their leadership of the club on a points based system. This allows them to effectively demonstrate that they have; managed attendance; made an impact; worked well with senior and teacher advisors; engaged and satisfied their members.
