In our 1st Grade 6 Biology lab, the Sea Dragons embarked on an exciting journey to investigate how different-sized beakers affect heat loss, a topic that ties directly into their current studies on Experimental Design. This experiment offered the students a comprehensive hands-on experience, allowing them to delve deeply into the Scientific Method.

Working in groups, the students were tasked with recognizing and correctly using various lab tools while carefully following safety regulations when handling glass materials and hot objects. Under the close supervision of myself and our School Lab Manager, Ms. Stephanie, they demonstrated impressive teamwork and collaboration.

Throughout the experiment, the students applied each step of the Scientific Method, from gathering and analyzing data to drawing graphs to visually represent their results. They then wrote detailed conclusions and critically evaluated their methods, identifying weaknesses and proposing realistic, achievable improvements. This exercise not only reinforced their understanding of scientific investigation but also fostered important skills such as data analysis and critical thinking.

In the first unit of East Asian History, students study the ancient history of China, India and Japan, from pre-history up until the start of the first centralized empires. In India, this includes the Vedic Period, in which Indo-European cattle-herders from Central Asia moved into the valleys of the Indus and Ganges Rivers. These Indo-Europeans, called "Aryans," brought with them the language of Sanskrit and the early Hindu religion, both of which form the foundations of modern Hindu culture, and both of which are related to the ancient languages and religions of Europe, which students have previously studied in Grades 5 and 6. The Aryans also developed a caste system, in which different members of their society were given different jobs, each with their own unique duties, responsibilities, and social role.

For this activity, students played a game that simulated the development and evolution of ancient Aryan society. Students worked in teams of four to five, with each student taking on the role of a different caste or social group in their kingdom. Each turn, students performed tasks related to their caste's function, all of which contributed to the expansion of their kingdom's resources - both the size of their cattle herd, from which their final score would be derived, as well as the expansion of their army, which was needed to protect their herd from the other teams. One student at each table played the role of the scholarly Brahmin caste, and conducted research, revealing cards that changed the rules of the game and provided advantages to certain members of the team. These included, for example, the adoption of sedentary grain agriculture, the development of a stricter caste system, the introduction of standardized Sanskrit, and the development of new religious and social ideas.

The game had three major objectives. First, to demonstrate the rationale behind the caste system, as both a tool of labor specialization and a means of social organization and control. Second, to show how Aryan society developed from relatively egalitarian tribes of cattle-herders to highly stratified and centralized agrarian kingdoms.  Finally, and most importantly, it aimed to present a remote period of history to the students in an engaging and immersive manner. It is Dr. Smith's hope that this activity has helped students build an interest in Indian history, and that moving forwards they will be better able to see the connections and parallels that Indian history shares with Chinese and Japanese history.
