The autumn air is brisk and invigorating, filled with vibrant coastal hues. Here at BIPH, two highlights connect like two flowers. One serves as a stage where dreams intertwine, and the other as a science hall where mysteries are explored. May all students use this as a bridge to approach science's rigor and experience the enchantment of art. May they grasp life's essence between reality and romance.

Good day, Sea Dragon Parents,
各位海龙家长，大家好：
If you have been watching the skies you know that we have been treated to a brilliant full moon, of late. To the almanac-writers this glorious spectacle is known as the Hunters Moon, the first full moon after the fall equinox (late September) and a close companion to the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the fall equinox. The astronomers know further that this current full moon is also a Super Moon, a moon slightly larger and more vivid because its orbit is bringing it close to Earth. So why, other than that these gifts of nature are beautiful to look upon, do I feel the need to give an astronomy lesson today?
近期，倘若您仰望夜空，定会发现一轮璀璨的满月高悬天际。年历编写者将这轮皎洁的明月称为“猎人月”，它标志着秋分（九月下旬）之后的首个满月，紧随其后的便是丰收月，即与秋分最为接近的圆月。天文学家们也将这次满月称作超级月亮，因其轨道位置更靠近地球，故而显得更为巨大且明亮。然而，除了与您分享这自然之美，今天我以这样的天文现象开头也别有用意。
These celestial events also coincide with the end of Quarter 1. It’s almost as if the heavens and the heaven of BIPH are somehow aligned! The quarter marks the first “permanent” manifestation of all the work that has been going on here through what has been an amazing start to the year. In this, there is plenty of good news. This makes us all feel great, motivated for more, proud of our accomplishments. There is nothing so sweet as success! And, of course, there is often concerning, uncomfortable news in this moment: grades that may be less than we’d like, or that are less than we believe we deserve, or skills we see right there in front of us, but can’t quite get to. Sometimes we feel we’ve done our absolute best, but still not earned what we expected. As surely as there is sweetness in success, there is some bitterness in falling short.
这样的天文景观恰好与我们第一学季的结束不谋而合，仿佛天空在以某种方式与BIPH校园遥相呼应！这一学季，标志着我们所有持之以恒进行的工作，首次有了展现的机会，这无疑是一个令人振奋的开端。在此期间，我们收获了诸多喜讯，它们让我们感到喜悦，激励着我们不断前行，令我们对以往的成就感到无比自豪。成功的滋味，确实是无比地甘甜！当然，在喜悦之余，我们也难免会遭遇一些令人忧虑与不安的消息：或许成绩未能如我们所愿，或是未能与我们付出的努力相匹配，又或是触手可及的技能暂未掌握。有时，我们感到即便倾尽全力，却依旧达不到我们渴望的结果。正如成功的甜美，失败的苦涩，亦是人生旅途中不可或缺的一部分。
Students often see this time in a binary way – sweet or bitter – and can find it hard to see the wholeness of this process of success and failure. But isn’t it true that these vacillations are just part of an overall cycle of growth, a cycle that – as surely as the moon waxes and wanes – leads us to our best evolutions?
学生们常常以非黑即白的方式看待这个时刻——甜蜜或苦涩——很难全面地看到成功与失败背后所有相关因素。然而，这些起伏正是完整成长周期中不可或缺的一环，它们如同月之盈亏，引领着我们不断蜕变升华，不是吗？
Our Mission says the BASIS experience will be one of “transformation.” Just how does this happen? Not just in success, it turns out, but in the ebbs and flows of challenge and success. For the challenges bring us discomfort, and from this arises new strategies, the quest for new resources or angles, a recognition of commitment, the push to do better. The sweetness of success comes from this – from the challenges – but only if we meet these with the courage or grit to stay in them, the personal responsibility to perceive our own roles and agency in them, the integrity to see clearly and honestly what we need to do in response. It’s not so easy. But this discomfort – which is just the misperceived feeling of growth – is actually what makes the process work. This is the message I want students to hear about the quarter end. There is some “permanence” to it. The quarter has ended. But it just a point on a line of growth that, if understood correctly, can lead us to our most transformational moments.

Back to astronomy. As for hunters, beneath a Hunter Moon, or harvesters beneath a Harvest Moon, gathering what they must from the land and their surroundings for the hard winter ahead, so our students, your children, find themselves in a gathering time. The gatherings for them are the lessons of the year’s start, which are abundant as they look for signs in their report cards, like hunters or farmers looking for guidance in the autumn sky. The lessons are like winter provisions for them, in an inch-by-inch growing season that is entering a challenging stretch, but also the stretch most likely to generate the greatest transformations. The spring, on our school calendar and in our metaphoric growing season, is not too far off, but there is plenty to be done along the way to our biggest measurements – things like comprehensive exams or APs. In April and May we’ll have the Strawberry and Flower Moons of abundance to occupy our skies, signs that we’ve weathered the winter. And if we’ve made what we should of the lessons of this first quarter – especially the uncomfortable, most valuable ones – what sweet fruit we will taste, what flagrant blossoms we will discover.

In all of this metaphor and meandering, please know how proud I am of the work of your children, the commitment of our teachers, the strength of our community. While perhaps not as immediately majestic as the full moons I’ve described, this tiny piece of the universe that is Park Lane Harbour is magnificent to me. Thanks for being with us in our work. Thanks for reenforcing the values messages of this challenging experience. And for sure, thanks for looking to the skies with me!

This year’s Middle School production, The Pumpkin King, a creative adaptation written by Ian Ratcliffe, from the Nightmare Before Christmas brings our students’ talents to life! The performance combines middle school drama, G5 choir, and G6-12th band, showcasing the amazing collaboration across the arts department. Behind the scenes, the art department is preparing stunning props to transport the audience into the set and transforming the cast into their iconic characters with make-up art.

Come see our talented drama students take the stage, portraying Jack Skellington and Sally with humor, heart and imagination. Hear the hauntingly beautiful atmosphere performed by the choir mixing campus carnival-inspired tunes and festive holiday favorites, as the school band delivers a dynamic soundtrack, enhancing every twist and turn of the story. This will be the first time 5th grade choir will be singing songs accompanied by a live orchestra. Let's all look forward to the upcoming performance on October 31st, a feast of creativity, talent and passion!
