On the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, a bright moon hangs high in the night sky, while the glow of earthly lights interweaves with the moonlight. This is the Mid-Autumn Festival, a tradition passed down for millennia. As one of China's four major traditional festivals—alongside the Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival, collectively known as the "Four Seasonal Celebrations of Huaxia"—it was included in the first batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage lists in 2006 and became an official national statutory holiday in 2008. On this day, no matter where they are, wanderers always look up at the same moon, sensing the profound significance of "reunion" through the poetic verse, "Over the sea, the moon shines bright; we gaze at it afar, sharing this moment despite the distance."

The origins of the Mid-Autumn Festival can be traced back to the ancient practice of moon worship during the autumn equinox in the pre-Qin period. The Rites of Zhou records, "In the mid-autumn month, the elderly are cared for with congee and special foods." Ancient people offered harvest tributes to the moon deity, praying for bumper crops and household safety. By the Tang Dynasty, moon gazing during Mid-Autumn had become a popular tradition. Emperor Xuanzong of Tang once hosted a "Moon Palace Banquet" in the imperial court, while literati penned timeless verses like, "I raise my cup to invite the moon, and together with my shadow, we make a party of three." The Song Dynasty added a vibrant festive atmosphere to the occasion. The Eastern Capital: A Dream of Splendor depicts Bianjing during Mid-Autumn night: "Wealthy families adorned pavilions, while commoners vied for space in taverns to enjoy the moon." Early forms of mooncakes, known as "palace cakes" or "small cakes," began to appear in markets. Myths such as Chang'e flying to the moon, Wu Gang cutting the immortal laurel tree, and the Jade Rabbit pounding elixir added a layer of romantic imagination to the festival. Legend has it that after Chang'e consumed the elixir and ascended to the moon, her husband Houyi arranged mooncakes in the courtyard as an offering. This practice was emulated by ordinary people, and thus the tradition of reunion has been passed down through generations.

The customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival are a triple feast for the senses—taste, sight, and emotion. The most iconic treat is the mooncake, often poetically described as "small cakes that mimic the moon's shape." From the sweet lotus seed paste with yolk of Cantonese-style mooncakes and the savory fresh meat filling of Suzhou-style, to the crimson-hued zilaihong of Beijing and the lard-infused pastries of Chaoshan, these delicacies—whether sweet, salty, meaty, or vegetarian—each carry distinct flavors. With every bite, one tastes reunion and savors nostalgia.Children carry rabbit-shaped lanterns or pomelo peel lamps, wandering through streets and alleys, their flickering lights embodying the hope for "a full moon and an even fuller reunion." In Lingnan regions, the custom of "burning tile towers" sees flames leaping toward the sky, symbolizing the expulsion of evil and the invitation of good fortune. In Jiangnan's water towns, the spectacular tidal bores of the Qiantang River, roaring like ten thousand galloping horses, form a breathtaking parallel to the bright moon above. In southern Fujian, the clattering of dice in the bobing game rings in good luck for the year ahead.Yet, no matter how diverse the customs, "reunion" remains at the heart of it all. Families gather around tables to enjoy crabs and osmanthus blossoms, while those unable to return home raise virtual glasses over video calls. Wherever the moonlight reaches, home is found.

From the broad-mindedness of "May we all be blessed with longevity, sharing the moon's beauty across a thousand miles," to the melancholy of "Tonight, under the bright moon, everyone gazes afar—yet where, I wonder, has the autumn nostalgia settled?"—the Mid-Autumn moonlight has always been imbued with the deepest emotional philosophy of the Chinese people. It is not merely a celebration of harvest, but also a gentle reminder: the most precious things in life are the bowl of warm soup shared with family around the table, the reassuring "I’m doing well" at the other end of the phone call, and the reunion that calls us home no matter how far we roam.Today, as young people begin recreating ancient-style mooncakes, admiring the moon in Hanfu, and using drones to form patterns of the Jade Rabbit, tradition and modernity are blending in the warmest of ways. May we all, under this Mid-Autumn moon, find our own "answer to reunion"—one that requires no lavish feasts nor countless brilliant lights. So long as hearts are together, that alone is life’s truest flavor.

Right now, the moon outside the window is full. Are you ready to keep this millennia-old rendezvous?
