When the keyboard melodies of the CHAOS band meet the HKDSE review notes on the desk, and when the interdisciplinary reflections of the World Scholar's Cup intertwines with the unique charm of classical Chinese literary expression, the youth trajectory of Andy Wong Chun Yin is filled with vivid marks of diverse exploration. As a Form 5 HKDSE scholar at the Shenzhen Meizhong International Academy, the keyboardist of the CHAOS band, and also an award-winning member of the World Scholar's Cup, he has blazed a distinctive path of growth among multiple identities with rigorous logic and poetic expression.

Andy adheres to a disciplined daily routine to prepare for his HKDSE studies. “As I gear up for the DSE, I keep a steady schedule: from 7 to 8 PM each evening, I sit quietly to sort through math errors; on weekends, I set aside two hours to memorize materials for Chinese argumentative essays.” He admits that English Ethics is his biggest hurdle right now, often leaving him struggling with awkward phrasing. What drew him to the World Scholar's Cup was the allure of “weaving knowledge across disciplines”: “It’s like standing confidently on stage, turning British academic insights into practical wisdom - far more fulfilling than just cramming isolated facts.” This passion for integrating knowledge has quietly shaped his approach to learning.

His experience preparing for the World Scholar's Cup became a cornerstone for organizing his knowledge system. Once, when faced with questions that involved translating Chinese and English classics and cultural comparisons, he felt stuck as “bits of knowledge scattered like stars, making it hard to weave them into a coherent whole.” Later, he had a sudden realization: “The key to connecting them isn’t forced fusion, but finding a common thread. First, identify the field each piece of knowledge belongs to, then explore their shared principles - just like untangling a knotted skein, grab the loose end first, then pull gently to sort them out one by one.” He applied this insight directly to his HKDSE preparation. When confronting complex exam questions, he first breaks down the question stem, then maps the links between knowledge points, no longer distracted by irrelevant details. He says the method of “classifying to find common ground and uniting fragments into a whole” from the World Scholar's Cup has “sharpened my thinking when facing tough problems, bringing immense benefits.”

Chemistry used to be Andy’s biggest enemy, especially double displacement equations—he often mixed up conditions and products, and even “wanted to give up on the subject entirely.” At a crucial moment, the thinking style he honed during the World Scholar's Cup inspired him. He tried comparing chemical reactions to a “gift exchange,” explaining playfully: “Reactants are gift-bearers - sodium carbonate carries carbonate ions, hydrochloric acid carries chloride ions; reaction conditions are the chance to meet, which works at room temperature; and products are the gifts after exchange - sodium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide.” He even crafted little stories for each reaction: “Like carbonate ions and chloride ions swapping homes, celebrating with a burst of carbon dioxide.” This unique method boosted his accuracy in chemical equations from 60% to 90%, prompting his teacher to ask curiously: “What’s your secret?”

The clash of ideas in team collaboration taught him the value of “listening and integration”. During a World Scholar's Cup discussion, he insisted on tackling environmental issues with satellite pollution monitoring (a technological approach), while his teammate advocated for a legal system of fines. In the heat of the argument, he kept interrupting: “This isn’t a solid plan - technology is better.” It wasn’t until the team leader reminded him to “first jot down others’ ideas, then debate right and wrong” that he listed both viewpoints on paper. Suddenly, he realized they could be merged into a complete solution: “technological evidence collection paired with legal punishment for violations.” This lesson carried over to HKDSE study groups. Now, when discussing math questions, he always asks Which condition are you elaborating your reasoning on? before sharing his own thoughts, ditching the former inefficient communication where everyone insisted on their own assertions.

There were moments when the double pressure pushed this resilient teenager to the brink of collapse. “Last December, the DSE mock exam and the World Scholar's Cup Regional Competition overlapped. For ten straight days, I slept only five hours a night. One evening, as I sorted through my wrong questions and stared at the page covered in red crosses, I suddenly broke down crying and thinking ‘I can’t excel at either.’” But he quickly adjusted his strategy, splitting big goals into small, manageable tasks: “For DSE, I tackle one module a day - math functions on Monday, physics mechanics on Tuesday; for the World Scholar's Cup, I spend just one hour a day reviewing mistakes; when I’m worn out, I play the piano for about ten minutes, even if it’s just short tunes.” He shared his stress-relief philosophy frankly: “I no longer chase ‘perfection’ - I just aim to ‘master one more knowledge point each day.’ Like understanding an electrical formula this morning - that counts as a small victory. Gradually, I regained my strength and resolve.”

Looking back on this journey, Andy believes his greatest growth is overcoming his fear of difficult problems. In the past, when he encountered a question he couldn’t answer - like the interdisciplinary ones he first faced in the World Scholar’s Cup - he would skip it outright, saying, “I can’t do this.” Now, facing DSE final questions, even if he has no initial ideas, he writes down the known conditions first, then breaks them down step by step. “I’ve come to realize that most questions become manageable when you take them apart. This ‘breakdown thinking,’ honed during World Scholar's Cup preparation, has now become my ‘bedrock of confidence’ when confronting challenges.” This change of perspective has made him much more composed in his studies.

To fellow students preparing for the DSE who also want to balance work and interests, Andy offered sincere advice: “If you’re studying for the DSE and also want to join competitions or pursue hobbies, don’t force ‘perfect balance’ - instead, find where the two can complement each other.” In his view, the interdisciplinary thinking from the World Scholar's Cup helps unlock complex DSE questions, and the joy of playing the keyboard in the band eases exam fatigue. The key is to “weave methods from competitions and hobbies into your studies - like using the World Scholar's Cup’s ‘organizing knowledge connections’ to aid DSE review, and leveraging the ‘joy of hobbies’ to relieve exam pressure. That way, you can naturally do both well.”
